Cetirizine hydrochloride.
Description
Atrizin is available in both tablet and syrup form.
Each film coated tablet contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride BP 10 mg and each 5 ml cherry flavoured syrup contains 5 mg of Cetirizine Hydrochloride BP. Atrizin syrup contains sodium benzoate as preservative. Cetirizine is a piperazine derivative and a potent functional antagonist of histamine H1 receptors. Atrizin is a long acting antihistamine. Central sedation or antimuscarinic effects do not generally occur with the usual doses of Atrizin.
Indications/Uses
Atrizin is indicated for the symptomatic relief of allergic manifestations, such as: Seasonal allergic rhinitis; Perennial allergic rhinitis; Urticaria of allergic origin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Atrizin tablet: Adults and children over 12 years : 10 mg (1 tablet) once daily.
Atrizin syrup: Adult & Children over 6 yrs : 10 mg (2 teaspoonful) daily.
Child 2-6 yrs: 5 mg (1 teaspoonful) daily or 2.5 mg (1/2 teaspoonful) twice daily.
Cetirizine is safe for use in the elderly patients.
Less frequent dosing is advised in patients with reduced creatinine clearance. In patients with renal insufficiency, dosage should be reduced to half the daily dose.
Overdosage
Drowsiness can be a symptom of overdosage. In case of massive overdosage, gastric lavage should be performed together with the usual supportive measures. To date Cetirizine has no specific antidote.
Contraindications
Cetirizine is contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to it. It should not be administered to neonates, lactating mother and pregnant women.
Special Precautions
Do not exceed the recommended dose. For patients whose symptoms persist, it is advised to consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Side Effects
There have been occasional reports of mild and transient side effects such as headache, sedation, dizziness, dry mouth and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Drug Interactions
There are no reports of hazardous interactions with other drugs to date. Concomitant administration with alcohol or diazepam does not impair psychomotor performance any more than the impairment of performance produced by alcohol alone. Cetirizine should be used with caution if sedatives are also being taken.
