Indications/Uses
As an adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total & LDL-cholesterol levels in patients w/ primary hypercholesterolemia (types IIa & IIb). Primary prevention of coronary events & secondary prevention of CV events.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Hypercholesterolemia & CHD Initially, 10-20 mg once daily at bedtime.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver function tests. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Liver function tests should be performed at baseline & at 12 wk following initiation of therapy or the elevation of dose. History of liver disease or heavy alcohol ingestion. Marked elevation of CPK levels or diagnosed or suspected myopathy (discontinue drug). Renal impairment, elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, musculoskeletal pain (includes arthralgia), dizziness, headache, fatigue, chest pain, vision disturbances (includes blurred vision), rash, urinary abnormality (includes dysuria & nocturia).
Drug Interactions
Other lipid metabolism regulators, cholestyramine, colestipol, drugs that inhibit CYP450, niacin, digoxin, propranolol, cyclosporine, fibrates.
