Enalapril maleate
Indications/Uses
All grades of essential HTN, renovascular HTN, all degrees of heart failure. Symptomatic heart failure. Improve survival, retards progression of heart failure, reduces MI, reduces hospitalization for heart failure & unstable angina pectoris.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Essential HTN Initially 10-20 mg, depending on the degree of HTN. Mild HTN: initially 10 mg daily. Other degrees of HTN: Initially 20 mg daily. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. Max: 40 mg/day. Renovascular HTN Initially ≤5 mg/day. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. Heart failure Initially 2.5 mg. Maintenance: 20 mg/day in single or 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of angioneurotic edema relating to previous treatment w/ an ACE inhibitor. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, asthenia, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, nausea, diarrhea, muscle cramps, rash & cough.
Drug Interactions
Additive effect w/ other antihypertensives. Potential risk of hyperkalemia when used concomitantly w/ K-sparing diuretics, K supplements (eg, spironolactone, triamterene or amiloride) or K-containing salt substitutes. May increase lithium levels.
