Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections of the lower resp tract, skin & skin structure, UTI, bacterial septicemia, bone & joint, gynecological including endometritis, pelvic cellulitis & other female genital tract infections, intra-abdominal, CNS infections including meningitis. Bacterial septicemia. Infections associated w/ hemo- & peritoneal dialysis & w/ continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Infections in immunocompromised patients & those in intensive care eg, infected burns.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/deep IM inj Adult 1 g every 8-12 hr. Max: 6 g/day. UTI 250 mg every 12 hr. Complicated UTI 500 mg every 8-12 hr. Uncomplicated pneumonia 500 mg-1 g every 8 hr. Mild skin & skin structure infection 500 mg-1 g every 8 hr. Bone & joint infection 2 g IV every 12 hr. Serious gynecologic infection 2 g IV every 8 hr. Serious intra-abdominal infections 2 g IV every 8 hr. Meningitis 2 g IV every 8 hr. Very severe life-threatening infections especially in immunocompromised patients, including those w/ neutropenia 2 g IV every 8 hr. Lung infection caused by Pseudomonas spp in patient w/ cystic fibrosis w/ normal renal function 30-50 mg/kg IV every 8 hr. Max: 6 g/day. Renal impairment CrCl 50-31 mL/min 1 g every 12 hr, 30-16 mL/min 1 g every 24 hr, 15-6 mL/min 500 mg every 24 hr, <5 mL/min 500 mg every 48 hr. Infant & childn 1 mth-12 yr 30-50 mg/kg every 8 hr. Max: 6 g/day. Neonate (0-4 wk) 30 mg/kg every 12 hr.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to ceftazidime, cephalosporins or penicillins. Consider diagnosis of C. difficile-associated diarrhea in patients w/ diarrhea following administration of antibacterial agent. History of lower GI disease particularly colitis; those receiving nephrotoxic medicines or potent diuretics. Long term or repeated use. Inducible type I β-lactamase has been noted. Monitor prothrombin time in patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment or poor nutritional state & those receiving protracted course of antimicrobial therapy & exogenous vit administered as indicated. Renal & hepatic impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis, pain &/or inflammation at inj site after IM inj, distal necrosis; pruritus, rash, urticaria, photosensitivity, fever, TEN, SJS, erythema multiforme, angioedema, anaphylaxis, allergic reactions; diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pseudomembranous colitis, metallic taste; headache, dizziness, paresthesia; elevated levels of ceftazidime in patients w/ renal impairment; transient eosinophilia; reversible thrombocytosis; transient leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia; transient increases in serum conc of AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, LDH, &/or γ-glutamyltransferase, hyperbilirubinemia, hepatitis &/or jaundice; transient increases in blood urea, BUN &/or serum creatinine conc; transient mild to moderate decrease in glomerular filtration, interstitial nephritis, renal failure.
