Cefalexin monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Resp, UTI, skin & soft tissues susceptible infections. Cellulitis, subcutaneous abscesses & wound infections, pneumonia & broncho-pneumonia, acute & chronic UTI eg, cystitis, pyelonephritis & bacteriuria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult 1-2 g daily given in divided doses at 6-, 8- or 12-hrly intervals. Severe or deep-seated infections Max: 6 g daily. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections 500 mg every 12 hr. Childn 25-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Max: 4 g daily. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections Total daily dose may be divided & administered every 12 hr. Oral susp Adult 250 mg every 6 hr. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections 500 mg every 12 hr. Childn 25-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Max: 4 g daily. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections Total daily dose may be divided & administered every 12 hr. Severe infections Dose may be doubled. Otitis media 75-100 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses. β-hemolytic streptococcal infections Administer for at least 10 days. Childn weighing 40 kg 10-20 mL qid or 20-40 mL bid; 20 kg 5-10 mL qid or 10-20 mL bid; 10 kg 2.5-5 mL qid or 5-10 mL bid. Oral drops Adult 250 mg every 6 hr. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections 500 mg every 12 hr. Childn 25-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Max: 4 g daily. Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis, mild uncomplicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections Total daily dose may be divided & administered every 12 hr. Severe infections Dose may be doubled. Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Discontinue if an allergic reaction occurs. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms w/ prolonged use. Take appropriate measures if superinfection occurs. May result to +ve direct Coombs' tests. False +ve reaction of glucose in the urine w/ Benedict's & Fehling's soln & Clinitest tab. May mislead quantitative determination of urinary protein using strong acids. Impaired renal function. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea. Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain; allergic reactions eg, rash, urticaria & angioedema; anaphylaxis. Genital & anal pruritus, genital moniliasis, vaginitis vag discharge, dizziness, fatigue & headache; eosinophilia, neutropenia & slight elevations in AST/ALT.
