Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
FC tab: Infections eg, gonorrhea, gynecological infections, surgical infections & acute uncomplicated UTI. Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, inhalational anthrax (post-exposure), lower resp tract infection, acute sinusitis, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever & skin, bone & joint infections. Infusion: Bone & joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, infectious diarrhea, resp tract infections, skin infections, typhoid fever, UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult 250-750 mg bid. Gonorrhea 250-500 mg as a single dose. Gynecological infection 500 mg bid. Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis 500 mg as a single dose. Prophylaxis of surgical infection 750 mg as a single dose 60-90 min pre-op. Acute uncomplicated UTI 250 mg bid for 3 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg bid for 28 days. Inhalational anthrax (post-exposure) 500 mg bid. Lower resp tract infections, acute sinusitis, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, skin, bone & joint infections 500 mg bid. IV  Lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infection 400 mg bid-tid for 7-14 days. Complicated UTI 200-400 mg bid for 7-14 days. Prostatitis 400 mg bid for 28 days. Prophylaxis of inhalation anthrax 400 mg bid for 60 days. Bone & joint infections 400 mg bid-tid for 4-12 wk. All doses to be infused over 60 min.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin & other quinolones.
Special Precautions
Avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight. Pregnancy & lactation. Convulsion, increased intracranial pressure & toxic psychosis. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Tendinitis or tendon rupture. Risk of drug resistance of coliform; crystalluria (high dose). Patients w/ renal or hepatic failure; CNS diseases eg, epilepsy. Childn <18 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain/discomfort, headache, restlessness & rash. Infusion: Vomiting, dyspepsia, dizziness, confusion, insomnia, tremor, drowsiness, nightmares, hallucinations, psychotic reactions, depression, convulsion, intracranial HTN.
Drug Interactions
Delay in drug absorption w/ food. May reduce bioavailabilty w/ Mg- & Al-containing antacids. Decreased clearance of theophylline. Decreased caffeine clearance & inhibits paraxanthine formation.
