Azithromycin
Indications/Uses
Infections from resp pathogens, uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis or pharyngitis. Alternative drug for multi-drug resistant Salmonella typhi infection outside the CNS.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn >2 yr Pharyngitis or tonsillitis 12 mg/kg once daily for 5 days. Child >6 mth Pneumonia or otitis media 10 mg/kg on the 1st day, then 5 mg/kg daily for a further 4 days. Acute otitis media 30 mg/kg as single dose, or 10 mg/kg daily for 3 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or any of the macrolide antibiotics. Concomitant use w/ ergot derivatives. Hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Serious allergic reactions including angioedema & anaphylaxis. Pseudomembranous colitis. Observe for signs of superinfection w/ non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Renal impairment. Childn <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, abdominal discomfort (pain/cramps), flatulence, vomiting & diarrhea; hearing impairment, including hearing loss, deafness &/or tinnitus; interstitial nephritis & acute renal failure; abnormal liver function including hepatitis & cholestatic jaundice; reductions in neutrophil counts; chest pain, melena, nephritis, vaginitis, headache, dizziness, convulsions, vertigo, somnolence & fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Possibility of ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. Antacids (take at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after).
