Cefuroxime (tab: axetil, inj: Na)
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections (including soft-tissue infections), surgical infection (prophylaxis) & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab UTI 125 mg bid. Resp tract infection 250-500 mg bid. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g as single dose. Childn >3 mth & infant 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 250 mg daily. Childn >2 yr Otitis media 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid. Max: 500 mg daily. IV Adult Meningitis 3 g every 8 hr. Surgical prophylaxis 1.5 g prior to procedure. May be supplemented by 750 mg every 8 hr for up to 24-48 hr. Total joint replacement 1.5 g powd may be mixed w/ methyl methacrylate cement. IM Gonorrhea 1.5 g as single dose, divided between 2 inj sites. IV/IM Adult Renal impairment CrCl 10-20 mL/min 750 mg bid, <10 mL/min 750 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, cephalosporins or penicillins (history). Patients predisposed to allergic symptoms eg, bronchial asthma, rash, urticaria; systemically in poor condition, unable to take diet in parenteral. False +ve reaction for glucose in urine w/ Benedict's & Fehling's soln or Clinitest tab. +ve direct Coombs' test. Regular monitoring of hepatic or renal function, blood. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn (mild to moderate hearing loss). Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Pruritus, rash (erythema), fever, urticaria, swelling of lymph node, arthralgia, anaphylactic reaction. Neutropenia & eosinophilia; hemolytic anemia. Rise in GOT, GPT & AL-P levels.
Drug Interactions
May increase renal disorder w/ diuretics (furosemide) or aminoglycosides.
