Isophane insulin human (rDNA origin)
Indications/Uses
Management of type I & II diabetes (who are not adequately controlled by diet &/or oral hypoglycemic agents) & gestational diabetes; for the initial stabilization of diabetes in patients w/ diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome & during periods of stress eg, severe infections & major surgery in diabetic patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC inj Diabetes type 1 0.5-1 IU/kg/day. Type 2 0.3-0.6 IU/kg/day.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Administer 30 min before a meal.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Caution should be made when switching to another type of insulin. Monitor blood glucose & measure HbA1c periodically. Hepatic or renal impairment. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia, edema, allergy to insulin, hyperglycemia & ketoacidosis, lipoatrophy & lipodystrophy, insulin resistance.
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids, INH, niacin, estrogens, OC, phenothiazines, thyroid replacement therapy. Oral hypoglycemics, salicylates, sulfa antibiotics, certain antidepressants eg, MAOIs, certain ACE inhibitors & β-blockers, pancreatic function inhibitors. Alcohol.
