Biotin
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of biotin deficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Older patients 10 mg daily. Adult & childn w/ symptoms of biotin deficiency 5-20 mg daily. Adult & childn w/ biotinidase deficiency 5-10 mg daily. Malabsorption syndrome 10 mg daily. Genetically determined biotin-dependent enzyme insufficiency (multiple deficit of carboxylase) 20 mg daily. Usual maintenance dose: 10-50 mg daily. Max: 100 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before meals w/ small portion of water.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
May interfere w/ lab tests that are based on a biotin/streptavidin interaction; false -ve troponin test results in patients w/ MI taking biotin. Renal impairment. Not to be given in childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Possible allergic reactions in individual intolerant to biotin, which can be exhibited as a chest pain, shortness of breath, urticaria, appearance of skin rash.
Drug Interactions
Decreased plasma levels conc w/ anticonvulsants. Reduced activity of biotinidase w/ valproic acid. May cause biotin deficiency w/ plenty use of raw eggs for 2-3 wk. Avoid high doses of pantothenic acid.
