Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections eg, chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis (invasive salmonellosis, shigellosis), gonorrhea, Lyme disease, meningitis (including meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis), septicaemia, surgical infection prophylaxis, syphilis, typhoid fever & Whipple's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Doses may be given by intermittent IV infusion over 30 min or by deep IM inj. Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Severe infections Up to 4 g daily. Gonorrhea 250 mg IM as a single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 1 g as a single dose 0.5-2 hr prior to surgery. Childn 50-75 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses. Max: 2 g daily. Meningitis 100 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses, sometimes w/ a loading dose of 75 mg/kg. Max: 4 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or cephalosporins. Hyperbilirubinemic neonates, particularly prematures. Neonates <28 days receiving Ca containing IV products.
Special Precautions
History of penicillin allergy. Severe renal disorder; poor oral ingestion or parenteral nutrition patients; patients w/ gallbladder, biliary tract, liver or pancreatic disease. Superinfections may occur w/ prolonged or repeated therapy. Pregnancy. Avoid use during lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Exanthema, urticaria, erythema, flare, pruritus, shivering, fever, allergic dermatitis, edema, erythema multiforme, anaphylactic or anaphylactic like reaction; granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leukopenia; elevation of GOT, AL-P & symptomatic precipitation of ceftriaxone Ca salt in gall bladder; nausea, vomiting, loose stools, diarrhea; headache. Shock; interstitial pneumonia; avitaminosis.
