Indications/Uses
Lower resp tract, urinary tract, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint infections, pneumonia, serious bacterial infections w/ or w/o bacteremia or septicemia, pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial meningitis, STD. Surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult 1-2 g daily as a single or in 2 divided doses. Severe infections Up to 4 g daily. Gonorrhea 250 mg IM as single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 1 g as single dose 0.5-2 hr prior to surgery. Childn Serious infections 50-75 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses every 12 hr or in single daily dose. Max: 2 g. CNS infections 100 mg/kg in equally divided doses every 12 hr or 75 mg/kg as a loading dose to initiate therapy. Hepatic dysfunction &/or significant renal disease Max: 2 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins &/or penicillins. Altered prothrombin. GI disease especially colitis. Discontinue in patients showing evidence of gall bladder disease or sonographic abnormalities. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, glossitis or stomatitis. Hypersensitivity reactions (eg, rash, urticaria & edema), transient pain at site of IM inj & local phlebitis.
Drug Interactions
Possible disulfiram-like reaction w/ alcohol.
