Indications/Uses
Vaccination against varicella in individuals ≥12 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥13 yr 0.5 mL SC dose at elected date & 2nd dose of 0.5 mL 4-8 wk later. Childn 12 mth-12 yr 0.5 mL SC dose. If a 2nd dose is administered, allow min interval of 3 mth between doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component including gelatin. History of anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Blood dyscrasias, leukemia, lymphomas or other malignant neoplasms affecting bone marrow or lymphatic system. Immunosuppressive therapy. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states including immunosuppression in association w/ AIDS or other clinical manifestations of infection w/ HIV. Family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency. Active untreated TB & febrile illness w/ fever (>38.5°C). Pregnancy (3 mth following vaccination).
Special Precautions
Do not inj IV. Anaphylactoid reaction may occur; provide adequate treatment. HIV patients w/ & w/o evidence of immunosuppression. Avoid close contact w/ susceptible high-risk patients (immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women & their newborn infants w/o documented history of varicella or lab evidence of prior infection) for up to 6 wk due to risk of transmission. Lactation. Infant <12 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, inj site complaints or rashes (pain/soreness, swelling &/or erythema, rash, pruritus, hematoma, induration, stiffness). Anaphylaxis (including anaphylactic shock) & related phenomena eg, angioneurotic, facial & peripheral edema; necrotizing retinitis; nausea, vomiting; aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy; varicella; encephalitis, CVA, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Bell's palsy, ataxia, febrile & non-febrile seizures, aseptic meningitis, dizziness, paresthesia, irritability; pharyngitis, pneumonia/pneumonitis, upper resp tract infection, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, bacterial infection including cellulitis; herpes zoster.
Drug Interactions
Defer vaccination for at least 5 mth following blood/plasma transfusions or administration of Ig or varicella zoster immune globulin (VZIG); or 2 mth thereafter VZIG. Reye's syndrome w/ salicylates (avoid use for 6 wk after vaccination).
