Tamsulosin HCl
Indications/Uses
Benign prostatic hyperplasia to relieve symptoms of urinary obstruction.
Dosage/Direction for Use
EC tab 400 mcg once daily. May be increased to 800 mcg once daily after 2 wk if necessary. ER tab 1-2 tab once daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken on an empty stomach. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/open.
Contraindications
EC tab: Renal impairment. ER tab: Hypersensitivity. Patient w/ history of orthostatic hypotension, severe hepatic insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Syncope. Do not use in women, childn. EC tab: Potential risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, patient w/ serious or life-threatening allergy w/ sulfa drugs. Closely monitor BP in patients receiving antihypertensives. Rule out prostate carcinoma prior to treatment. ER tab: Perform digital rectal exam & determination of prostate specific antigen (PSA) prior to & during treatment at regular intervals. Patients w/ orthostatic hypotension, severe hepatic & renal insufficiency (CrCl <10 mL/min). Discontinue use 1-2 wk prior to cataract surgery. Closely monitor BP & heart rate. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness, rhinitis, diarrhea, nausea, abnormal ejaculation, blurred vision; symptomatic postural/orthostatic hypotension, skin rash, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema of tongue, lips & face; palpitations, constipation, vomiting. EC tab: Infection, back pain, somnolence, increased cough, chest pain, sinusitis, decreased libido. Vertigo. Arrhythmia, dipsosis, nervousness, stomach heaviness, stomachache, decreased appetite, edema, urinary incontinence, impaired swallowing, generalized fatigue, burning sensation of the pharynx, hypotension & skin desquamation. ER tab: Asthenia; dry mouth; insomnia, drowsiness, syncope; pedal edema; priapism.
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine may result in a moderate increase in plasma levels. Diclofenac or warfarin may increase elimination rate. Enhanced hypotensive effect when given concurrently w/ other α-adrenergic blockers, anesth agents, Ca channel & β-blockers. Antihypertensives, furosemide.
