Na bicarbonate 1,760 mg, Na citrate 630 mg, citric acid 720 mg, tartaric acid 890 mg
Indications/Uses
Urinary alkalinization where indicated for gout therapy, as urinary alkalinizers to prevent crystallization of urates; for symptomatic relief of painful urination (dysuria); for relieving of discomfort in UTI; to enhance action of certain antibiotics especially some sulfonamides.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Dissolve 4-8 g in ½ glass of cold water tid-qid. Childn 6-12 yr 4 g in ½ glass cold water bid-tid.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Renal failure or hypernatremia; in conjunction w/ hexamine mandelate or hexamine hippurate therapy.
Special Precautions
Patients on low Na diet; those w/ cardiac failure, HTN, impaired renal function, peripheral & pulmonary edema & pre-eclampsia. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Mild laxative effect. Systemic alkalosis &/or hypernatremia (prolonged & excessive use).
Drug Interactions
Decreased therapeutic effect of chlorpropamide, lithium, salicylates, tetracyclines. Increased therapeutic effect of amphetamines, ephedrine/pseudoephedrine. Risk of systemic alkalosis & development of Ca stones (in patients w/ uric stones) & hypernatremia w/ antacids; increased Al absorption w/ Al-containing antacids. Reduced solubility of quinolones. Additive effect w/ laxatives.
