Indications/Uses
Treatment of type IIa, IIb, III & IV hyperlipoproteinemias in conjunction w/ dietary modification.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initial dose: 100 mg tid or 300 mg/day as a single dose. If after a strict cholesterol diet the conc of cholesterol stays at >4 g/L, dose can be increased to 100 mg qid. Initial dose should be maintained until cholesterol level returns to normal. If cholesterol level is stabilized, 100 mg bid can be given provided that the cholesterol level is checked every 3 mth. If there is a new increase in the plasma cholesterol conc, 100 mg tid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Severe liver & renal dysfunction. Gallbladder disease. Hypersensitivity to fenofibrate. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Special Precautions
For the 1st yr therapy, serum transaminase should be monitored every 3 mth. Therapy should be discontinued if there is an increase in SGPT conc >100 u/L.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, headache, muscular spasm, transient elevation of transaminases & creatinine phosphokinase, skin allergic reactions, fatigue & vertigo.
Drug Interactions
Potentiates effect of oral anticoagulant. Hepatotoxic substances, MAOIs.
