Metronidazole
Indications/Uses
Amoebiasis, urogenital trichomoniasis, nonspecific vaginitis, giardiasis, curative treatment of medico-surgical infections due to susceptible anaerobic pathogens. Prophylaxis against infections caused by susceptible anaerobic pathogens in high risk surgical contents. Conversion from prophylactic or curative inj treatment of infections due to susceptible anaerobic pathogens. For patients w/ clinical evidence of trichomonal infection, treatment of sexual partner should be done.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn 5-16.7 mg/kg daily in divided doses for 7-10 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Active neurological disorders or history of blood dyscrasias, hypothyroidism & hypoadrenalism.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if ataxia or CNS symptoms occur. Avoid during pregnancy (1st trimester) & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Metallic taste, furred tongue & dry mouth, GI disturbances eg, diarrhea, anorexia, vomiting, epigastric distress, constipation, occasional flushing & headaches especially w/ concomitant ingestion w/ alcohol, dizziness.
