Tramadol HCl
Indications/Uses
Relief of moderate to severe pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult 50-100 mg every 4-5 hr if necessary. Max: 600 mg daily.
Contraindications
Acute alcohol or CNS-acting drug (eg, hypnotics, analgesics or psychotics) intoxication, severe resp depression, patients at risk of stupor due to head injuries/lesions, receiving MAOIs & w/ raised intracranial pressure.
Special Precautions
Not indicated for minor pain. Patients w/ decreased resp reserve & should not be given during bronchial asthma attack or in heart failure secondary to chronic lung disease; cholangia, hypothyroidism, adrenocortical insufficiency, prostatic hypertrophy, shock or inflammatory or obstructive bowel disorders, myasthenia gravis. Delayed resp depression following epidural or intra-tracheal administration. Possibility of dependence cannot be excluded. Concomitant use of morphine. Debilitated & alcoholic patients. Hepatic & renal disorders. May impair ability to drive & operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & infant. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Occasionally resp depression; palpitations, chills, chest pain, decreased BP, arrhythmia; vomiting, nausea, GI fullness, borborygmus. Pyrexia, flushing, chills, urticaria, inj site irritation & excessive bronchial secretion.
Drug Interactions
Intensified sedative effect w/ CNS-acting drugs (eg, tranquilizers, hypnotics, alcohol).
