Indications/Uses
Short-term management of moderate to severe post-op pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Recommended dose: Initially 30 mg IV followed by 10-30 mg 4-6 hrly as needed. Post-op pain Initial post-op period, as often as 2 hrly if needed. Max: 120 mg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Suspected or confirmed cerebrovascular bleeding or hemophilia, other bleeding problems eg coagulation or platelet function disorders. Active, recent or history of GI bleeding or recent GI perforation or active or history of peptic ulcer, ulceration colitis or other ulcerative GI disease. Aspirin-induced nasal polyps associated w/ bronchospasm or angioedema; anaphylaxis or history of other severe allergic reactions of cross-sensitivity. Moderate or severe renal impairment. History of asthma. Hypovolemia or dehydration. Should not be given post-op in patients w/ high risk of bleeding, pre-op as prophylactic analgesic & intraoperatively. Pregnancy, labor, delivery & lactation. Childn <16 yr.
Special Precautions
History of GIT disease. Renal & hepatic impairment; conditions leading to reduction in blood vol or in renal blood flow. Cardiac decompensation, HTN. Patients on full anticoagulation therapy, w/ coagulation disorders or are receiving drug therapy that interferes w/ homeostasis; during cosmetic plastic surgery. Discontinue use if symptoms of liver disease or hepatotoxicity develop. Not for obstet analgesia. Concomitant use w/ methotrexate. Elderly, debilitated & patients weighing <50 kg.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, dyspepsia, GI pain; drowsiness. Diarrhea; dizziness, headache, sweating; edema; pain at inj site.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of bleeding w/ other NSAIDs or aspirin, pentoxifylline, anticoagulants. Increased t½ & plasma conc w/ probenecid. Furosemide, lithium, methotrexate, protein-bound drugs.
