Cefuroxime (FC tab: axetil, inj: Na)
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections & UTI. FC tab: Surgical infection prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 750 mg every 8 hr. Severe infection 1.5 g IV every 6-8 hr for 5-10 days. Childn & infant 30-60 mg/kg/day, may be increased to 100 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. Neonate Total daily dose of childn but in 2-3 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Monitor renal & hematological status especially during prolonged & high dose therapy. Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
