Indications/Uses
4 mg: Add-on therapy in patients 2-5 yr w/ mild to moderate persistent asthma & inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids & in whom as needed short-acting β-agonists provide inadequate clinical control of asthma. Prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma for patients ≥2 yr. 5 mg: Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction & symptomatic relief of allergic rhinitis. 10 mg: Management of chronic asthma, allergic rhinitis & prophylaxis for exercise indicated asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 10 mg once daily. Childn 6-14 yr 5 mg daily, 2-5 yr 4 mg daily. All doses to be taken in the evening.
Administration
Chewable tab: Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meal. FC tab: May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hepatic impairment or cirrhosis.
Special Precautions
Should not be used for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. 4 mg: Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended for childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, resp tract infection, GI disturbances; generalized pain, arthralgia, myalgia, fever, dizziness; elevated liver enzyme values.
Drug Interactions
Potent CYP450 isoenzyme CYP3A4 inducers eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin. Peripheral edema w/ prednisone.
