Methimazole
Indications/Uses
Management of hyperthyroidism including treatment of Grave's disease; prep of hyperthyroid patients for thyroidectomy. Adjunct to radio-iodine therapy & treatment of thyroid storm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 15-60 mg daily in single or divided doses. Euthyroid patient 5-15 mg daily. Maintenance: 5-15 mg daily. Childn Initially 400 mcg/kg daily. Maintenance: ½ of initial dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Nursing mothers.
Special Precautions
Patients should undergo close surveillance & monitored for mouth ulcers, sore throat, fever, bruising & malaise. May cause fetal harm when administered in the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Should not be given during pregnancy & lactation. Scalp defects, choanal, esophageal atresia & tracheoesophageal fistula in exposed infants. Monitor neonatal development & thyroid function closely in infants.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea & vomiting, gastric discomfort, skin rashes, pruritus, hair loss, headache, aplastic anemia or isolated thrombocytopenia & agranulocytosis, taste disturbance, arthralgia, myopathy, vasculitis, nephritis, lupus-like syndrome, neutropenia, liver damage.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate activity of anticoagulants. Increased clearance of β blockers. Increased serum levels or digitalis glycosides. Decrease theophylline clearance.
