Thiamazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment of hyperthyroidism. May be used to ameliorate hyperthyroidism in prep for subtotal thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy. Used when thyroidectomy is contraindicated or not advisable.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Mild hyperthyroidism Initially 15 mg daily. Moderately severe hyperthyroidism Initially 30-40 mg daily. Severe hyperthyroidism Initially 60 mg daily. Maintenance: 5-15 mg daily. All doses to be given in 3 equally divided doses at approx 8-hr intervals.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Long-term therapy may lead to remission of the disease. Discontinue use in the presence of agranulocytosis (symptoms include fever, sore throat, skin eruptions, headache or general malaise), aplastic anemia (pancytopenia), hepatitis, exfoliative dermatitis; hepatic transaminase >3 times ULN. Monitor prothrombin time especially before surgical procedures; bone marrow, liver & thyroid function periodically. Concomitant use w/ drugs known to cause agranulocytosis. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, urticaria, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, arthralgia, paresthesia, loss of taste & abnormal hair loss, myalgia, headache, pruritus, drowsiness, neuritis, edema, vertigo, skin pigmentation, jaundice, sialadenopathy & lymphadenopathy.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants; β-adrenergic blocking agents; digitalis glycosides; theophylline.
