Indications/Uses
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer & chronic gastritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Active duodenal ulcer 1 g qid; may be continued for 4-8 wk unless healing shown by radiographic or endoscopic exam & up to 12 wk for long-term therapy. Maintenance: 1 g bid. Gastric ulcer 1 g qid. Prophylaxis of GI hemorrhage from stress ulceration 1 g 6 times daily; a dose of 8 g daily should not be exceeded. Childn 40-80 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hr.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before each meal and at bedtime. Observe 1 hr interval between enteral feeding and sucralfate administration. Do not take w/in 30 min before or after antacid use.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe renal insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Seizures, muscle weakness, bone pain & severe Al encephalopathy in patients w/ end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis. Al toxicity. Renal impairment. Seriously ill patients at risk of bezoar formation & intestinal obstruction. Patients w/ delayed gastric emptying or receiving concomitant enteral feeds may be at increased risk. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Not recommended in infants & young childn.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence or gastric discomfort; dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, vertigo, back pain & skin rashes; hypersensitivity reactions eg, pruritus, edema, urticaria, resp difficulty, rhinitis, laryngospasm & facial swelling.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ absorption w/ non-antacid (30-min interval). Cimetidine, ranitidine, digoxin, fluoroquinolone antibacterials, ketoconazole, levothyroxine, phenytoin, tetracycline, quinidine, theophylline & warfarin. For enteral feeding, 1 hr interval should elapse.
