Amoxicillin trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections of GUT, resp tract & GIT & meningitis caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual regimen: 250-500 mg tid. Resp tract infection 3 g bid. Acute UTI 3 g repeated once 12 hr later. Gonorrhoea 3 g single dose. Dental abscess 3 g repeated once 8 hr later. Prophylaxis of endocarditis Single 3 g dose 1 hr before dental procedure. Repeated 6 hr later if necessary. Childn ½ of adult dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
History of allergic or hypersensitivity reaction to any penicillin. Infections caused by penicillinase-producing organisms.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins or other allergens. Discontinue use if superinfections occur. Pseudomembranous colitis. Periodically assess renal, hepatic & hematopoietic function during prolonged therapy. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; erythematous maculopapular rashes, urticaria; cytopenic purpura eosinophilia, leukopenia.
Drug Interactions
Decreased renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid. Bacteridical effects may be interfered w/ chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides & tetracyclines.
