Contents
Killed bivalent (O1 & O139 strains) whole cell oral cholera vaccine
Indications/Uses
Active immunization against Vibrio cholerae serogroups O1 & O139 for patients >1 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Primary immunization 2 doses given orally at 2-wk interval.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Avoid food & drink 1 hr before & after vaccination.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the vaccine or formaldehyde. Delay vaccination in presence of acute illness eg, acute GI or febrile illness.
Special Precautions
Not a substitute for therapy in cases of cholera or acute episode of GI disease or acute watery diarrhea. Postpone vaccination until after immunosuppressive treatment completion. Monitor patient for at least 30 min after vaccination in case of rare anaphylactic reactions. Patients w/ HIV or AIDS. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Acute gastroenteritis, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, itching, rash, nausea, weakness, cough, vertigo, dryness of mouth.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ oral live vaccines eg, oral live polioviruses vaccines.
