Indications/Uses
Complementary symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in infants (>3 mth) & in childn together w/ oral rehydration & usual support measures, when measures alone are insufficient to control & when causal treatment is not possible. As complementary treatment if causal treatment is possible.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1.5 mg/kg/dose (corresponding to 1-2 sachet) tid, together w/ oral rehydration, at regular intervals. Childn >27 kg Two 30-mg sachet tid, 13-27 kg One 30-mg sachet tid. Duration: 5 days, not exceeding 7 days. Treatment should be continued until 2 normal stools are recorded.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be added to food, dispersed in a glass of water or in the feeding-bottle. Mix well & administer immediately.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or saccharase-isomaltase deficiency.
Special Precautions
Manage rehydration &/or consider IV rehydration especially in case of serious or prolonged diarrhea w/ significant vomiting or lack of appetite. Presence of bloody or purulent stool & fever; antibiotic-associated diarrhea; chronic diarrhea. Patients w/ diabetes (due to sucrose content). Prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting. Discontinue when severe skin reactions occur. Childn w/ renal or liver impairment. Chronic diarrhea. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant < 3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Uncommon: Tonsillitis; rash, erythema; erythema multiforme, tongue/face/lip/eyelid edema, angioedema, urticaria, erythema nodosum, papular rash, prurigo, pruritus.
