Salbutamol sulfate
Indications/Uses
Relief of bronchospasm associated w/ reversible obstructive airway diseases eg, bronchial asthma & COPD. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm if given before exertion.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Relief of bronchospasm Adult & childn >4 yr 100 or 200 mg (1 or 2 inhalations) every 4-6 hr or as needed. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm Adult 200 mcg (2 inhalations) 15-30 min before exercise; childn >4 yr 100 or 200 mcg (1 or 2 inhalations) 15-30 min before exercise.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. In the management of premature labor.
Special Precautions
Asthma exacerbations. Paradoxical bronchospasm. Deterioration of asthma. Hypokalemia. Patients w/ CV disorders including coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias, or HTN; convulsive disorders; hyperthyroidism; DM; patients who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <4 yr. Elderly ≥65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypotension. Urticaria, angioedema, rash, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis, collapse; DM, hypokalemia, metabolic acidosis; tremors, headache, hyperactivity, nervousness, dizziness, vertigo, central nervous stimulation, sleeplessness; tachycardia, palpitations, HTN, cardiac arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, & extrasystoles), peripheral vasodilation, angina, myocardial ischemia; paradoxical bronchospasm, bronchitis, asthma, exacerbation, dyspnea, epistaxis, cough, dysphoria or voice alterations, drying or irritation of oropharynx, hoarseness, laryngitis, lung disorders, oropharyngeal edema, nasopharyngitis, rhinitis, flu-like syndrome, upper resp inflammation, URTI, viral resp infections; nausea &/or vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, gastroenteritis, heartburn, eructation, flatulence, dry mouth, tongue ulceration, glossitis, altered taste, mouth & throat irritation, gaggling; muscle cramps, musculoskeletal pain, rigors, back pain; ear disorder or ear pain, sweating, UTI, pyrexia.
Drug Interactions
Not to be administered w/ other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or epinephrine. May inhibit the effects of β-agonist (eg, propanolol). ECG changes &/or hypokalemia w/ non-K sparing diuretics (eg, loop or thiazide diuretics). Decreased serum digoxin conc. May potentiate effect on the vascular system w/ MAOIs or TCAs.
