Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Relief of mild to moderately severe somatic & neuritic pain eg, headache, migraine, traumatic pain, postpartum, post-op & dental pain; pain conditions: dysmenorrheal, hemorralgia, accompanied by spasm or hypogastric pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
500 mg tab 1 tab tid. Cap 1-2 cap tid. Oral susp Childn 9-12 yr 20 mL, 5-<9 yr 15 mL, 2-5 yr 10 mL, 6 mth-<2 yr 5 mL. Repeated up to tid as necessary. Should not be given >7 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aspirin or any other NSAIDs. Inflammatory bowel disease, peptic & intestinal ulceration. CVA, MI, coronary artery bypass graft, uncontrolled HTN, CHF NYHA II-IV. Previous or active peptic ulceration. Cardiac disease. Renal & hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Dehydration & renal disease. Pregnancy. Elderly. Childn <14 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, diarrhea or gas constipation, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness & dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Plasma protein binding drugs. Anticoagulants.
