Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections eg, chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis (invasive salmonellosis; shigellosis), gonorrhea, Lyme disease, meningitis (including meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis), septicemia, surgical infection (prophylaxis), syphilis, typhoid fever & Whipple's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
By slow IV inj over 2-4 min, intermittent IV infusion over at least 30 min or deep IM inj. Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses; Up to 4 g/day in severe infections. Uncomplicated gonorrhea Single dose of 250 mg IM. Surgical infection Single dose of 1 g 0.5-2 hr prior to surgery. 2 g prior to colorectal surgery. Prevention of secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 250 mg IM. Childn & infant 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Up to 80 mg/kg/day in severe infections. Prevention of secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 125 mg IM. Neonate Max dose: 50 mg/kg IV over 60 min. Doses >50 mg/kg should be administered by IV infusion only.
Contraindications
History of previous allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to penicillins, penicillin derivatives, penicillamine or cephalosporins. History of GI disease especially ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis or antibiotic-associated colitis. Renal function impairment.
Special Precautions
Allergic to cephalosporins, penicillins, penicillin derivatives or penicillamine. Newborn infants & hyperbilirubinemic neonates. Long-term use may cause oral candidiasis. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoprothrombinemia, pseudomembranous colitis.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of hemorrhage w/ salicylates, NSAIDs, sulfinpyrazone.
