Pantoprazole
Indications/Uses
GERD, PUD, patients who require prophylaxis for NSAID-associated ulceration & pathological hypersecretory states eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Duodenal ulcer 40 mg daily in the morning for 2 wk, continued further for 2 wk if not fully healed. Benign gastric ulcer & GERD 40 mg daily in the morning for 4 wk, continued further for 4 wk if not fully healed. Elderly & renal impairment Should not exceed 40 mg daily. Hepatic impairment due to cirrhosis 40 mg every other day. H. pylori eradication Pantoprazole 40 mg bid, clarithromycin 500 mg bid, amoxicillin 1,000 mg bid; pantoprazole 40 mg bid, metronidazole 400 mg bid, clarithromycin 500 mg bid; pantoprazole 40 mg bid, amoxicillin 1,000 mg bid, metronidazole 500 mg bid. Dose taken for 7 days, continued further for 7 days if not fully healed.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not crush/chew/split.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Avoid concomitant use w/ other indigestion remedies. Condition may be aggravated by smoking. Avoid taking alcohol, citrus fruits/juices, caffeinated drinks, tomatoes or spicy foods. Long-term use (>16 wk). Regularly monitor liver function. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Renal & hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, skin rashes & headache; reversible confusional state in severely ill patients.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ absorption of ketoconazole, ampicillin, esters & Fe salts.
