Folic acid.
Description
Each tablet contains: Folic Acid BP 5 mg.
Folic Acid 5 mg Tablet (OPTIFOL) is a yellow, circular, flat, bevel edged, uncoated tablet with break line on one side.
This product contains Folic Acid which is needed for the production of healthy red blood cells.
It is also used to treat certain types of anemia caused by faulty development of red blood cells.
Indications/Uses
For iron-deficiency anemia and folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia.
For folic acid deficiency in women of childbearing potential and pregnant women to protect against neural tube defects in their offspring.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults and Children 1 year and older: For patients with folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia, take 1 tablet per day for 4 months, unless prescribed by doctor.
For prophylaxis of neural tube defects in pregnancy, take 1 tablet per day for 4 weeks before pregnancy and continued through the first trimester.
Missed dose: Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If the patient forgets to take a dose, take it as soon as the patient remembers it and then take the next dose at the right time. If the patient has any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask a doctor or pharmacist. Do not take a double dose. Then go on as before.
What to do if the patient has taken more than the recommended dosage: If the patient takes more folate tablets than the patient should, seek immediate medical advise even if the patient feel well.
Overdosage
Overdose symptoms may include numbness or tingling, mouth or tongue pain, weakness, tired feeling, or trouble concentrating.
Contraindications
If the patient is allergic (hypersensitive) to active substance or any other ingredients if folate tablet.
If the patients suffers from Vitamin B12 deficiency including pernicious anemia, or any other blood disorder.
If the patient has Addison's Disease and low Vitamin B12 in the body.
Special Precautions
When should the patient consult a doctor: Reporting of Overdosage: If the patient gets (or someone else) accidentally takes too many tablets at the same time, contact the nearest hospital casualty department or tell a doctor immediately. Show any leftover medicines or the empty packet to the doctor.
Reporting of Side Effects: If the patient gets any side effects, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
This includes any possible side effects not listed in this monograph.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
If the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding, may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask the doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Folic Acid can be used during pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Tell the doctor if the patient notice any of the following side effects or notice any other effects not listed: Allergic reactions: Skin rash.
Gastrointestinal distress: Loss of appetite, flatulence, bloating.
Drug Interactions
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if taking or have recently taken, or might take any other medicines such as: Phenytoin or other drugs used to treat epilepsy such as Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine, or Barbiturate; Lithium for mental health problems; Aspirin for pain relief or to thin the blood; Methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
