Folic acid
Indications/Uses
Fe-deficiency anemia & folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia. Folic acid deficiency in women of childbearing potential & pregnant women to protect against neural tube defects in their offspring.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >1 yr Folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia 1 tab once daily for 4 mth. Prophylaxis of neural tube defect in pregnancy 1 tab once daily starting 4 wk before pregnancy & continued through the 1st trimester.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ vit B12 deficiency including pernicious anemia, or any other blood disorder; Addison's disease & low vit B12 in the body.
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash; appetite loss, flatulence, bloating.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ phenytoin or other anti-epileptic drugs eg, Na valproate, carbamazepine, or barbiturate; lithium; aspirin; MTX.
