Levofloxacin hemihydrate
Indications/Uses
Used to treat lung, sinus, skin & urinary tract infections caused by certain life threatening bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dosage is according to doctor's instructions.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ or between meals. Swallow w/ a glass of water, do not chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolones. Patient w/ epilepsy; history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn or growing adolescents.
Special Precautions
Ruptures of the shoulder, hand, or Achilles tendon, or other tendons that requires surgical repair or resulted in prolonged disability. Discontinue treatment if symptoms of peripheral neuropathy develops. Avoid in patients w/ known prolongation of the QT interval, w/ uncorrected hypokalemia, & those receiving class Ia (quinidine, procainamide) or class III (amiodarone, sotalol) antiarrhythmic agents. Periodic assessment of organ system functions including renal, hepatic, & hematopoietic. Concomitant use w/ corticosteroids. Impaired renal function. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Irreversible peripheral neuropathy, CNS toxicity, CV toxicity, tendon/articular toxicity, & hepatic toxicity; toxic epidermal necrolysis, coagulation abnormalities & pancytopenia; liver damage & dysglycemia; autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Increased risk of tendinopathy (including rupture) & prolongation of the QT interval in older patients. Hematologic reactions (including agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia), & renal toxicities may occur after multiple doses.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption w/ Fe salts, or Mg- or Al-containing antacids. Reduced bioavailability w/ sucralfate. Lowered cerebral seizure threshold w/ theophylline, NSAIDs, or other agents which lower the seizure threshold. Reduced renal clearance w/ cimetidine & probenecid. Increased t½ of ciclosporin. Increased coagulation tests (PT/INR) &/or bleeding w/ vit K antagonist (eg, warfarin). Drugs known to prolong the QT interval (eg, class IA & III antiarrhythmics, TCAs, macrolides).
