Ampicillin Na
Indications/Uses
Treatment of UTI, otitis media, resp tract infections, enteric infections, bacterial meningitis, gm-ve septicaemia, billiary tract infections, other surgical infections, infective endocarditis, listeriosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg every 4-6 hr IM or slow IV inj over 3-5 min or by infusion. Meningitis 2 g given intravenous every 6 hr. Childn May be given ½ the adult dose.
Contraindications
Penicillin hypersensitivity. Glandular fever or lymphatic leukaemia.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if skin rash occurs. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis; lymphatic leukemia or possibly HIV infection.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; skin rashes, pruritis, urticaria, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis; anaphylactic shock; anemia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophillia, agranulocytosis, laryngeal or high fever.
Drug Interactions
Impaired drug excretion w/ probenecid. May decrease efficacy of oestrogen-containing OCs & atenolol. Increased risk of skin rash w/ allopurinol.
