Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of hemorrhage associated w/ excessive fibrinolysis. Prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Short-term therapy in hemorrhage Slow IV inj 0.5-1 g (or 10 mg/kg) tid. Continuous infusion Given at a rate 25-50 mg/kg daily. Childn 10 mg/kg IV bid-tid.
Special Precautions
Do not use in patients w/ active intravascular clotting. Patients w/ hematuria, predisposition to thrombosis. Hemorrhage due to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Lysis of existing extravascular clots may be inhibited. Perform regular eye exam & liver function tests in long-term therapy. Increased incidence of cerebral ischemic complications when given after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Adverse effects associated w/ rapid IV dosage. Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Dose-related GI disturbances. Hypotension particularly after rapid IV dosage. Thrombotic complications. Discontinue w/ transient disturbance of color vision. Hypersensitivity skin reactions.
Drug Interactions
Drugs w/ actions on hemostasis. Increased potential for thrombus formation w/ estrogens. Antagonized antifibrinolytic action w/ thrombolytics.
