Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of moderate pain, especially following surgery; fever, when administration by IV route is clinically justified by an urgent need to treat pain or hyperthermia &/or when other routes of administration are not possible.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult & adolescent >50 kg 1 g (ie, 1.5 mL/kg up to qid), min of 4-hr interval between each administration. Max: 4 g daily. Adult & adolescent <50 kg, childn >33 kg (approx 11 yr) 15 mg/kg (ie, 1.5 mL/kg up to qid), min of 4-hr interval between each administration. Max: 60 mg/kg, w/o exceeding 3 g daily. Childn >10 kg (approx 1 yr) & <33 kg 15 mg/kg (ie, 1.5 mL/kg up to qid), min of 4-hr interval between each administration. Max: 60 mg/kg, w/o exceeding 2 g daily. Childn, toddler & newborn infant <10 kg (up to approx 1 yr) 7.5 mg/kg (ie, 0.75 mL/kg up to qid), min of 4-hr interval between each administration. Max: 30 mg/kg daily. Severe renal impairment (CrCl 30 mL/min) Increase min intervals between each administration to 6 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or proparacetamol HCl. Severe hepatocellular insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Hepatocellular insufficiency, severe renal insufficiency (CrCl 30 mL/min), chronic alcoholism, chronic malnutrition, dehydration. Contains Na metabisulfite.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, malaise; hypotension; increased level of hepatic transformation.
Drug Interactions
Reduction in clearance w/ probenecid. Prolonged elimination t½ w/ salicylamide. Enzyme-inducing substances. Slight variation of INR values w/ oral anticoagulants.
