Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy in adults w/ partial seizures w/ or w/o secondary generalization; treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
150-600 mg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses. Epilepsy Initially 150 mg/day as 2 or 3 divided doses, then may be increased to 300 mg/day after 1 wk. Max of 600 mg/day. GAD 150-600 mg as 2 or 3 divided doses. Initially 150 mg/day, then may be increased to 300 mg/day after 1 wk. Following an additional wk, increase dose to 450 mg/day. Max of 600 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Diabetic patients. Discontinue immediately if symptoms of angioedema or upper airway swelling occur. Dizziness, somnolence, loss of consciousness & mental impairment; blurred vision, renal failure, w/drawal of concomitant antiepileptic medicinal products. W/drawal symptoms after discontinuation. Elderly CV compromised patients. Increased incidence of adverse reactions, CNS reactions & somnolence in treatment of central neuropathic pain due to spinal cord. Suicidal ideation & behavior. Reduced lower GIT function (eg, intestinal obstruction, paralytic ileus, constipation) w/ medications that have the potential to produce constipation eg, opioid analgesics. History of substance abuse; encephalopathy.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, somnolence, headache. Nasopharyngitis; increased appetite; euphoric mood, confusion, irritability, disorientation, insomnia, decreased libido; ataxia, coordination abnormal, tremor, dysarthria, amnesia, memory impairment, disturbance in attention, paresthesia, hypoesthesia, sedation, balance disorder, lethargy; blurred vision, diplopia; vertigo; vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, abdominal distention, dry mouth; muscle cramp, arthralgia, back pain, pain in limb, cervical spasm; erectile dysfunction; peripheral edema, edema, gait abnormal, fall, feeling drunk, feeling abnormal, fatigue; increased wt.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate the effects of ethanol & lorazepam. Resp failure & coma w/ other CNS depressant medicinal products. Additive in the impairment of cognitive & gross motor function w/ oxycodone.
