Indications/Uses
Condition in which routine systemic corticosteroid therapy is indicated, except adrenocortical-deficiency states for which hydrocortisone w/ supplementary fludrocortisone is preferred.

Dosage/Direction for Use
2.5-60 mg daily in divided doses, as a single daily dose after breakfast or as a double dose on alternate days.

Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Presence of acute infections uncontrolled by appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Patients already receiving corticosteroids w/ active or doubtfully quiescent TB. Prolonged use.

Special Precautions
Heart failure, recent MI or HTN, DM, epilepsy, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, hepatic failure, osteoporosis, peptic ulceration, psychoses or severe affective disorders. Renal impairment. Childn. Elderly.

Adverse Reactions
Na & water retention w/ edema & HTN, hypokalemic alkalosis, cardiac failure (in susceptible patients); osteoporosis, spontaneous fractures, muscle wasting, nitrogen depletion, hyperglycemia, precipitated diabetic state; delayed wound healing & increased infection susceptibility.

Drug Interactions
Enhanced metabolism & reduced effect w/ barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone or rifampicin. Increased plasma conc w/ OCs or ritonavir. Excessive K loss w/ K-depleting diuretics eg, thiazides or furosemide. Increased risk of hypokalemia w/ amphotericin B, xanthines or β2-agonists. Increased incidence of GI bleeding & ulceration w/ NSAID. Altered response w/ anticoagulants. Increased requirements of antidiabetic & antihypertensives. May decrease serum conc of salicylates & effect of anticholinesterases.
