Carbimazole
Indications/Uses
Management of hyperthyroidism; treatment of Grave's disease; prep of hyperthyroid patients for thyroidectomy. Adjunct to radio-iodine therapy & treatment of thyroid storm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 20-60 mg daily (given as single or in divided doses). Maintenance: 5-15 mg daily. Childn Initially 15 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take consistently w/ or w/o meals.
Contraindications
Pregnancy (may cause fetal harm when given during 1st trimester of pregnancy) & lactation.
Special Precautions
Mouth ulcers, sore throat, fever, bruising & malaise may occur. Perform full blood count. Discontinue treatment if neutropenia & liver damage occurs. Excessive dose may cause hypothyroidism & goiter. May cause fetal harm when administered in the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Congenital defects following maternal use. Monitor neonatal development & thyroid function closely in infants during lactation. Scalp defects, esophageal atresia & tracheoesophageal fistula in exposed infants.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, gastric discomfort; skin rashes, pruritus, hair loss; headache, taste disturbance; bone marrow depression, mild leucopenia, aplastic anemia or isolated thrombocytopenia, hypoprothrombinemia, agranulocytosis; arthralgia, myopathy; vasculitis; nephritis; lupus-like syndrome; neutropenia.
Drug Interactions
Decreased response w/ K iodide or iodine. Increased theophylline conc. Excessive or subtherapeutic response w/ phenindione, warfarin.
