Mometasone furoate monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of seasonal or perennial rhinitis symptoms in adults, adolescents & childn 2-11 yr. Prophylactic treatment in patients w/ history of moderate to severe symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Treatment of acute rhinosinusitis symptoms in patients ≥12 yr w/o signs or symptoms of severe bacterial infection. Nasal polyps & associated symptoms including congestion & loss of smell in patients ≥18 yr. Adjunctive treatment to antibiotics for acute episodes of sinusitis in adults & adolescents ≥12 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Seasonal allergic or perennial rhinitis Adult (including elderly) & adolescent 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. Maintenance: 1 spray in each nostril. Max: 4 sprays in each nostril once daily. Childn 2-11 yr 1 spray in each nostril once daily. Nasal polyposis Adult (including elderly) & adolescent ≥18 yr 2 sprays in each nostril bid. Reduce dose to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily once symptoms are adequately controlled. Acute rhinosinusitis 2 sprays in each nostril bid. Adjunctive treatment of acute episodes of sinusitis Adult (including elderly) & adolescent ≥12 yr 2 sprays in each nostril bid, may be increased to 4 sprays in each nostril bid if symptoms are inadequately controlled.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ active or quiescent TB infections of resp tract, or untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral infections or ocular herpes simplex. Periodic exam in patients under long-term treatment or usage for possible changes in the nasal mucosa, including the development of nasal ulcerations; discontinue use if localized fungal infections of nose & pharynx develops. Patients who are transferred from long-term administration of systemically active corticosteroids to Nasonex nasal spray; conduct appropriate measures in patients who exhibit signs & symptoms of adrenal insufficiency or w/drawal symptoms (eg, joint &/or muscular pain, lassitude & depression initially). Should not be used on recent nasal surgery or trauma. Signs or symptoms of severe bacterial infection (fever, persistent severe unilateral facial/tooth pain, orbital or periorbital face swelling or worsening of symptoms after initial improvement). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, epistaxis (ie, frank bleeding, blood-tinged mucus & blood flecks), pharyngitis, nasal burning, irritation, ulceration & polyposis; blurred vision.
Drug Interactions
May increase corticosteroids plasma conc & potentially increase the risk for systemic corticosteroid side-effects w/ strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir, cobicistat-containing products).
