Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Resp infection characterized by thick & viscous hypersecretions eg, acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis & its exacerbation, pulmonary emphysema, mucoviscidosis & bronchiectasis. Prevention or lessening of hepatic injury which may occur following ingestion of potentially hepatotoxic quantity of acetaminophen.
Dosage/Direction for Use
600 mg daily as single dose or in 3 divided doses. Antidote for acetaminophen overdose 140 mg/kg loading dose orally, followed by 70 mg/kg orally for every 4 hr for 17 additional doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve 1 tab in ½ glass of water.
Special Precautions
Asthmatic patients. History of PUD, predisposed condition GI hemorrhage.
Adverse Reactions
Bronchospasm, angioedema, rash, pruritus, edema, urticaria, hypotension, HTN; flushing, nausea, vomiting, fever, syncope, sweating, arthralgia, blurred vision, disturbances of liver function, acidosis, convulsions, cardiac resp arrest; haemoptysis, rhinorrhoea, stomatitis.
