Miconazole nitrate

Indications/Uses

Single-dose treatment of vag & vulval candidiasis. Fungal infections of vag especially originating from Candida & coexistent w/ gm +ve bacteria (Staph, Strep & Micrococcus bacteria causing secondary infections).

Dosage/Direction for Use

Insert 1 supp high into vag for 1 night before retiring. May be repeated after 3 days if necessary.

Overdosage

View Micotran overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Virgins & young girls who are not sexually mature. Pregnancy (1st trimester) & lactation. Childn <12 yr.

Special Precautions

Not recommended during menstruation period. Do not use diaphragms or condoms & w/ other vag products eg, tampon, douche or spermicide while on treatment. Diaphragms or condoms can be used after 3 days following insertion of supp. Pregnancy (2nd & 3rd trimester).

Adverse Reactions

Vag burning & itching; pelvic cramps, headache. Urticaria, skin rash (very rarely).

Drug Interactions

Increased risk of bleeding w/ acenocoumarol, anisindione, dicumarol, phenindione, phenprocoumon, warfarin; hypoglycemia w/ glimepiride; cardiotoxicity w/ pimozide. May inhibit metabolism & increase plasma conc of terfenadine, astemizole & cisapride. May increase risk of cyclosporine, phenytoin, phosphenytoin & trimetrexate toxicity; effects of opioid (eg, fentanyl). Increase in bioavailability of tolterodine in people w/ weak CYP450 2D6 activity. May reduce metabolism of carbamazepine. Increased plasma conc w/ oxybutinin & oxycodone.
