Indications/Uses
Intra-abdominal, resp tract (including in cystic fibrosis patients), skin & skin structure infections; UTI, meningitis, septicemia & infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dose is given by slow inj (over 3-5 min) or infusion (over 15-30 min). Adult 0.5-1 g every 8 hr. Meningitis Increased to 2 g every 8 hr. Cystic fibrosis Up to 2 g every 8 hr. Childn >3 mth & weighing <50 kg 10-20 mg/kg every 8 hr. Meningitis Increased to 40 mg/kg every 8 hr. Cystic fibrosis 25-40 mg/kg every 8 hr. Renal impairment CrCl 26-50 mL/min Usual dose every 12 hr, 10-25 mL/min ½ usual dose every 12 hr, <10 mL/min ½ usual dose every 24 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Superinfection w/ non-susceptible organisms eg, Enterococcus faecium, resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida. Pseudomembranous colitis may develop. Increased liver enzymes & abnormalities in haematological parameters, including +ve Coombs' test.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions (eg, skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever); GI effects (eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, tooth or tongue discoloration & altered taste).
Drug Interactions
Inhibited renal excretion w/ probenecid. Decrease in plasma conc of valproic acid.
