Fe sucrose (equiv to elemental Fe)
Indications/Uses
Treatment of Fe deficiency anemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 100 mg IV 1-3 wkly. Total dose: 1,000 mg in 10 doses. Repeat if needed not >3x wkly. Repletion treatment of Fe deficiency in hemodialysis patients 100 mg by slow IV inj over 5 min or IV infusion over at least 15 min. Min cumulative dose: 1,000 mg over 10 consecutive dialysis sessions.
Contraindications
Patients w/ evidence of Fe overload; anemia not caused by Fe deficiency.
Special Precautions
Discontinue therapy in patients w/ evidence of Fe overload. Periodic monitoring of hematologic & hematinic parameters (Hb, hematocrit, serum ferritin & transferrin saturation). Serum Fe values may be reliably obtained 48 hr after IV dosing. Hypersensitivity reactions, hypotension. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, fever, pain, asthenia, feeling unwell, malaise, accidental injury; hypotension, chest pain, HTN, hypervolemia; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, diarrhea; dizziness; cramps/leg cramps, musculoskeletal pain; dyspnea, pneumonia, cough; pruritus, inj site reaction.
