Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab daily at the same time starting on day 1 of the menstrual cycle w/ no interval during menstrual bleeding. Changing from combined OC prep: Start immediately w/ no tab-free interval or start on the day after the last active tab in case of daily prep omitting the inter tab. Changing from another progestogen-only contraceptive: Switch any day & start immediately. Changing from an injectable contraceptive, implant or a hormone-releasing IUD: Start when the next inj is due or on the day of the removal of implant or IUD.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Undiagnosed vag bleeding, severe arterial disease, hormone-dependent neoplasms, active VTE disorder. Severe liver disease eg, hepatic tumor. Suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ or w/ history of breast cancer, liver cancer, thrombosis, diabetes, ectopic pregnancy, infection of the fallopian tubes, surgery of the fallopian tubes, epilepsy, HTN, chloasma.
Adverse Reactions
Change in libido, wt gain, amenorrhea, abnormal blood cholesterol, decreased glucose tolerance, hirsutism, menstrual disease, ovarian cysts; vomiting, gastric, distress, nausea; breakthrough bleeding, mastalgia (breast pain); edema; depression, dizziness, headache, migraine, nervousness; acne vulgaris, chloasma, diaphoresis, pruritus, skin rash; abnormal hepatic function test, jaundice.
Drug Interactions
May potentially reduce efficacy w/ enzyme-inducing drugs eg, antiepileptics (eg, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, felbamate, primidone, phenytoin, phenobarb, topiramate), antibacterials (eg, rifamycin, rifampicin, rifabutine), antivirals (eg, nelfinavir, ritonavir, nevirapine), St John's wort; hepatic enzyme inducers (eg, griseofulvin & lesinurad). Interfered effectiveness w/ mifepristone. Decreased efficacy w/ sugammadex.
