Indications/Uses
Acute bacterial sinusitis; acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis; community acquired pneumonia; complicated UTI including pyelonephritis; chronic bacterial prostatitis; skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Patients w/ normal renal function (CrCl >50 mL/min) Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 500 mg for 7 days. Nosocomial pneumonia 750 mg for 7-14 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 500 mg for 7-14 days. Acute bacterial sinusitis 500 mg for 10-14 days. Uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 500 mg for 7-10 days. Complicated skin & skin structure infections 750 mg for 7-14 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg for 28 days. Uncomplicated UTI 500 mg for 3 days. Complicated UTI 750 mg for 5 days. Acute pyelonephritis 750 mg for 5 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Previous hypersensitivity reaction to levofloxacin, other quinolones. Epilepsy; patients w/ history of tendon disorders associated w/ fluoroquinolone administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn or adolescents (<18 yr).
Special Precautions
Patients prone to seizures eg, patients w/ pre-existing CNS lesions; patients being treated w/ fenbufen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, using medicines which lower the cerebral seizure threshold eg, theophylline. May give false -ve results in the bacteriological diagnosis of TB. Avoid exposure to UV light or UVA. May alter the ability to drive or to operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Tendinopathy & tendon rupture, hypersensitivity &/or anaphylactic reactions, severe hepatotoxicity (including acute hepatitis & fatal events), CNS effects, peripheral neuropathy, prolongation of the QT interval, blood glucose disturbances, photosensitivity/phototoxicity.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ GI absorption w/ antacids containing Mg or Al, sucralfate, metal cations eg, Fe & multivit prep w/ Zn. Increased risk of CNS stimulation & convulsive seizures w/ NSAID. Disturbances of blood glucose, including hyper- & hypoglycemia w/ an oral hypoglycemic agent (eg, glyburide) or w/ insulin.
