Indications/Uses
Cap: Adjunctive mucolytic therapy for resp tract disorders characterized by excessive or viscous mucous eg, acute & chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, asthmatic bronchitis & emphysema. Adjunctive therapy in otorhinolaryngology for otitis, sinusitis, nasopharyngitis, tubal otorrhea & for reducing hypersecretion prior to surgery. Syr/drops: Adjunctive therapy for chronic disorders of the resp tract associated w/ excessive or viscous mucus eg, chronic bronchitis, COPD & otitis media w/ effusions including glue ear.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap 1 cap every 8 hr or tid. Syr Childn 6-12 yr 10 mL every 8 hr, 2-5 yr 5 mL every 6 hr. Drops Infant 13-24 mth 1.2 mL every 6 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active peptic ulcer.
Special Precautions
Concomitant use w/ antitussives. Childn <1 yr. Cap: Patients w/ history of peptic ulceration. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, gastric discomfort, GI bleeding, skin rash. Cap: Transient hypothyroidism; headache; allergic reactions including occasional rash, urticaria & angioedema.
Drug Interactions
Precipitation w/ dilutions of syr containing pholcodine. Antitussives.
