Levofloxacin hemihydrate
Indications/Uses
Mild, moderate & severe infections eg, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated UTI including pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 500 mg for 7 days. Nosocomial pneumonia 750 mg for 7-14 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 500 mg for 7-14 days. Acute bacterial sinusitis 500 mg for 10-14 days. Uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 500 mg for 7-10 days. Complicated skin & skin structure infections 750 mg for 7-14 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg for 28 days. Uncomplicated UTI 500 mg for 3 days. Complicated UTI 750 mg for 5 days. Acute pyelonephritis 750 mg for 5 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin & other quinolones. Epilepsy. Patients w/ history of tendon disorders associated w/ fluoroquinolone administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn or adolescents <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients prone to seizures eg, w/ preexisting CNS lesions; those treated w/ fenbufen or NSAIDs, medicines which lower the cerebral seizure threshold eg, theophylline. May give false -ve results in bacteriological diagnosis of TB. Photosensitisation. May alter ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Tendinopathy & tendon rupture; hypersensitivity reactions; severe hepatotoxicity; convulsions & toxic psychoses, ICP & CNS stimulation.
Drug Interactions
May increase risk of seizures w/ antacids containing Mg or Al, sucralfate, metal cations eg, Fe. Blood glucose disturbances w/ oral hypoglycemic agent (eg, glyburide) or insulin.
