Hyoscine butylbromide
Indications/Uses
Relief of cramps in the muscles of stomach, gut, & bladder & tubes leading to the outside of the body. Symptomatic relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 2 tab qid. IBS Initially 1 tab tid, may be increased if further relief is necessary. Childn 6-12 yr 1 tab tid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Do not break/crush/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Not to be taken by patients w/ glaucoma; myasthenia gravis; suspected or confirmed blockage of bowel; paralytic or obstructive ileus; megacolon. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ very fast heart rate or other heart problems; problem w/ thyroid gland eg, overactive thyroid gland; difficulty or pain passing urine eg, men w/ prostate problems; constipation; fever. Unexplained abdominal pain persisting or worsening or occurring w/ fever, feeling or being sick, changes or blood in bowel movements, abdominal tenderness, low BP or feeling faint. Patients who cannot tolerate or digest sucrose & some sugars. Sight problems may occur; wait until sight returns to normal before driving or using any tools or machines. Not recommended in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions eg, skin reactions (eg, nettle rash, itching, rash, skin redness); severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic shock) eg, difficulty breathing, feeling faint or shock; painful red eye w/ loss of vision.
Drug Interactions
Medicines for depression eg, tetracyclic antidepressants or TCAs (eg, doxepin); allergies & travel sickness eg, antihistamines; control of heart beat eg, quinidine or disopyramide; severe mental illness eg, antipsychotics (eg, haloperidol or fluphenazine); breathing problems eg, tiotropium, ipratropium or atropine-like medicines; amantadine; metoclopramide.
